Artist Spotlight 2024: Hotel Rumors
Drawing inspiration from bands like The Killers, Roosevelt, New Order and Platinum Blonde, Hotel Rumors is an indie rock band driven with 80’s-style synth, infectious guitar hooks, and catchy vocal melodies. The songs are filled with upbeat optimism and energy that leads you into a danceable, melodic universe.
Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Hotel Rumors is the collaborative music project of song writing duo vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer James Faulkner and guitarist Colin Holyk, along with bandmates Francois Lucas on drums, bassist Dave Law and keyboardist Rob Riley.
Hotel Rumors has released two albums - Riviera and the dance remix Riviera Nights plus eleven singles, including the highly acclaimed Train to ’95, a song inspired by a train trip to the glamour and glitz of the French Riviera, L.A. Heaven, a musical ode to the glitter and gold of the Los Angeles rooftop party scene and Monaco, a song that has become the soundtrack to thousands of Instagram reels posted by travellers experiencing the spectacle of Monaco.
You released 3 singles in 2023. Is there an EP or an Album on the horizon or are singles the way to go for the band?
The musical listening experience certainly has changed over the past several years with greater streaming uptake for singles compared to albums, so we have really been focused on dropping singles. Our newest song, Kiss Me California, comes out on March 21st and we are wrapping up recording of Runaway Runway and Where I’m Needing You, both to be released by mid-year. Having said that, we are super excited to be working on a “best of” album titled Airport Locals for release at the end of the year, which we will also master on vinyl.
We’re now a few months into 2024, what are your plans/goals for the band for the rest of the year?
Playing live as much as possible! The band really shines when playing live and our goals are to perform at some of the summer festivals and continue to hit some of the great venues in Vancouver. Honestly, all the guys in the band are huge music fans and we know how exciting it is to go out and see, hear and feel live music. When we perform, we bring that exhilaration to the stage every time!
If you could collaborate on a song with anyone, Artist, Musician, Producer, etc. Who would it be?
James: Max Martin or Mark Holmes from Platinum Blonde
Francois: Rick Rubin
Colin: Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys
Rob: Matt Pike
Dave: Butch Vig
If you could be a part of your own dream festival, could be with any artist from any time period/any genre. Who would be your top 3 acts on the festival?
The Killers, M83, Roosevelt
