This is the Artist Spotlight, where we ask bands/artists 5 questions with the goal of getting to know the band/artist better, see what they’ve been up to and what lies ahead. Here are 5 questions we asked Ty Koch:
Before you were known as a Rock and Blues powerhouse, you spent your formative years as a member of the British Columbia Boys Choir. How did this experience impact your musical journey?
Easily the most formative part of my musical life. I learned every part of my early musicianship, toured around the world, made lifelong friendships but I think the important I learned was professionalism. I remember being told “you’re only as good as your last performance” which has always motivated me to give proper time and attention to everything before I go on stage.
You've released 2 singles so far this year, 'one day at a time' and 'Hold On Tonight'. Is there an EP or an Album on the horizon or are singles the way to go for you?
I’m still fairly all over the place musically, so at least for the time being singles. The next song I’m hoping to release in the new year will be a piano ballad with Nico Rhodes which is quite different from my guitar heavy releases of recent.
If you could collaborate on a song with anyone, Artist, Musician, Producer, etc. Who would it be?
Definitely Josh Homme (QOTSA). Queens has been my favourite band since I started playing guitar and even his song writing/producing credits on albums like “Post Pop Depression” just show how well rounded he is.
With the New Year around the corner, what are your 2024 plans, what's next?
The biggest thing is my very own show at The Port Theatre in Nanaimo as part of their Discovery Series on April 5th. It’s going to have everything from Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical and just a few originals for good measure. Beyond that, Im wanting to release more singles and tour again this summer.
If you could be a part of your own dream festival, could be with any artist from any time period/any genre. Who would be your top 3 acts on the festival?
Prince 2. The Allman Brothers 3. Marvin Gaye
