December Artist Spotlight: Sam Dowdell
“I’ve been really into the R&B genre and I find it so passionate and complex. It’s our complexity that makes us human and a great song and lyrics will showcase that.”
After a rollercoaster of a year, Sam is remaining optimistic and embracing the realities that come with the changing world. Not allowing herself to be bogged down. After everything that has transpired, Sam is taking a moment to smell the proverbial roses by revealing in the beauty of humanity. During the pandemic Sam has been busy taking in the emotions of the past year by writing new songs, and has plans to record and tour her first full length LP in the next two years.
You can expect Sams new material to capture a wide variety of emotions, especially those hardest to put into word. Everything from joy to anger, gratefulness to bitterness. For Sam, music is a form of self expression and a window into her personal experiences. Sams goal is always to connect with the listener, in hopes she will create something meaningful for someone else. Whether it’s stories about growth, resilience, or finding the light in a dark time, the message is always positive in the end, leaving the listener with a sense of hope. With emotions as a large source of her muse, Sams R&B influences suggest, she also understands the importance of rhythm, passion and the complexity of writing a great song. This together with her attention too empathy and the human experience, Sam is a gifted writer who we expect big things from in 2021.
Sams ambitions go well beyond Vancouvers walls but her roots will always be in the West. Sam’s a collaborator and over the past two years, she has worked with several talented local musicians in various projects. Don’t be surprised if Sam pops up at one of your favourite festival stages in the summers ahead. With hard work, a little luck and a great attitude to boot, Sam is a songwriter we should all have on our radar.
